Bavaria 37 Rudder 2002 call for help
« on: May 18 2017, 19:44 »
Hi all.

BOA has had an email from a Bavaria owner who's boat struck an underwater object some miles out to sea. The Bavaria 37 is 2002 year and he is trying to source a new rudder without much success. If you know where he could find one, preferably new please contact me.

Pretty sure that Jefa will do a replacement. Presume it is an insurance claim. Remember there are two sizes of rudder, one for the shoal draft version and a deeper one for the standard draft.

As an owner of a B36(2002) I'd be very interested to know why you needed to replace yours, particularly if it was down to something wearing out, or some mechanical failure. Is this something I need to keep a careful eye on for future reference?

Salty. It was a call from a BOA member who had hit something in the Solent and damaged the rudder. They were on holiday and wanted to try to get a fast repair. I think its all sorted now.

Ok, thanks Ant. I thought the posting from Imagine was a separate incident, as his refers to a B36 rather than the 37 at the start of the thread.

Thanks Imagine, was that corrosion on the part of the rudder stock inside the rudder, or on the part above the top of the rudder. If it was inside the rudder, then it was probably due to a leak resulting in stagnant sea water inside, and that is a killer for stainless steel.
