3 Line mainsail reefing - heads up!
« on: April 20 2012, 21:14 »
If you have mainsail reefing on a Selden boom and it feels as though it is becoming stiffer to use, read on!

Our Bav 32 (2002) had this problem we thought it was down to chafed rope, so arranged to take the boom to Hamble yacht services to have the lines replaced (they needed doing after 10 years anyway), they discovered that the wheels the in boom reefing cars run on had disintegrated and the pieces of them were jamming the mechanism. It is all sorted now and the price was better than we dared hope for and all is good as new.

Just thought is might serve to highlight the issue to anyone else so they can take preventive action before it all lets you down at sea.

Hope this helps

I have experienced exactly the same issue. I note that the new Seldon gear has done a way with he rollers and just uses nylon slides.
