Air conditioning a B39
« on: August 03 2015, 15:52 »
With summer temperatures in Malta consistently hitting high thirties I am beginning to give in to the idea of installing air conditioning on my B39. I would mainly use it while on my marina berth. Has anyone retrofitted an a/c on a B39 and can share his experience. I will be happy to receive some pointers.

Hi Pea-jay I don't have experience with a marine air conditioner but I did put a window unit in and the top drop board over it in the companionway, when we we're on the hard for 42 days in Florida waiting for our rudder  ;D.
Cheers

Bought an olimpia nano 9.5 for use with shore power and made a ply blank for the portlight outlet. Have it on the galley, saloon table or chart table. Not as efficient at cooling whole boat -bav 39 - but certainly takes the edge off.
Just had a rough quote for a marine unit to be fitted circa 5000 euros but will stick to the portable plus 12v cabin fans which I just installed

Thanks Stuart and Ziffius. I really prefer a fixed marine a/c. I also have a local quote of ?5k for a 12000 unit, excluding installation and 18% VAT. Horridly expensive for a little piddly unit when considering ?5k bought me a 14 KW domestic VRV with 3 air handlers, installation, commissioning and tax paid!
Why are these marine units so ridiculously expensive?

We did a short stop in Malta last year and I found the prices of the local chandlers quite expensive. May be you should check an online chandler like force4 or svb24.com.
