Replace washboard with doors
« on: March 05 2015, 13:37 »
Has anyone replaced the acrylic (heavy) washboard with nice wooden doors, like it is on the newer Cruisers.
My Bav. 38 (2003) still has the heavy plastic sheets which are rather un-handy, although already cut in two pieces.
Would appreciate some pics to see total and details of modification.
Greetings

Thanks for that.  I have been thinking about creating an access door for the locker under the fore-berth and your friend has done just that and very nicely.  Currently, we have to heave up the mattress to use it and SWMBO struggles to do this so we dont really make use of it.  It has given me some useful ideas :)

Hi Ripster I know what you mean we have  42 Cruiser which the fibreglass face on the birth and I've thought about purchasing the curved doors they used on the vanities for that project. I just want some assurance that I' m not going to weaken any of the structure by cutting a thing out of the face of the birth.   :o

How about such a thing under the fore bed. Unfortunately it's white and not wood, but could be sprayed brown, or so. Looks professional and is in different sizes and shapes available.

Hi Horst
That is exactly what I would like to use, the fibreglass base is covered with an offwhite carpet like material so white would be perfect, thanks.

Hi

One solution.
Hinges are lift off model.
It is still possible to use original acrylic washboard as well.

Have been thinking of doing a mod like the above for my companionway, I remember seeing the pictures on the barariayachtowners site before but that site and the link above seem to be broken( http://bavariayachtowners.org/page8/page4/page4.html )

Looks like the domain for bavariayachtowners.org has expired. I found a couple of thumbnails on the Wayback Machine...

How about a companionway in a B32 from 2004? The opening is wider at the top than on the bottom. I don't see how I'm going to get the doors fitted on the boat because of the tilted sides.

Quite straightforward. The later boats like my 2015 33 also has a tapered opening as a washboard is standard on some variations like the Easy 9.7. Doors were optional and a tapered piece of teak is fitted to either side to square up the hole. This acts as the door frame to attach the doors. It does of course mean that you cannot then have washboards as well unless you fit another slotted frame, either inside or outside the doors.

Thank you
Luckily I have the whole winter to plan the doors.

I was planning to use the doors when I am at the boat, and the washbords when I leave the boat for longer periods (and probably for the nights too)

Have a close look at the doors on the later boat. Must say I have never felt the need for washboards in addition (or instead o) the doors. However the bridge deck is higher on the Farr design boats. On my old 37 similar age to yours I split the one piece board 1/3 2/3 and left the lower part in place when sailing. You might consider raising the step while you are building the frame for the doors.

No sure why you would want doors. Seems to me they would only clutter up the companionway and possibly lead to the fouling of halyards and the like

Where we use our boat we need to use the heater 75% of the days we are out sailing. That means we have to play with the washbords a lot. Doors would be easier most of the time

Rather depends on the model. Many, like my 33 have the companionway well inset so the doors don't protrude past the bulkhead when open, but on others like the op's 32 they will open into the cockpit area.

For those interested in fitting doors, see the thread below. I have posted photos of my doors and the dimensions.
