If you are referring to the chrome knob push-in type, these commonly fail when the plastic "spring" within breaks. Remove the casing from the back of the door, and replace the broken part with a plastic spring made of washing up bottle material or similar bent in two - slide this in to activate the reciprocating mechanism. Sounds more fearsome than it is - if I can do it, so can anyone. Cost - nothing. And it works.
