Sail drive oil change
« on: September 16 2021, 23:00 »
Hi all, I have recently purchased a Bavaria 30 cruiser with the 19 hp engine, D1-20 with saildrive.
I understand that the saildrive oil standard has changed to using engine oil. Can you please confirm whether I should start to use this oil in my boat which is 15 years old and has been changed throughout this time using the previously specified gear oil.

I have a boat of the same age and changed from ATF to 15w40 Diesel engine oil about 4 years ago with no remarkable effect. When I did it the boat was on the hard and I also replaced shaft seals which necessitated removal of the bearing housing, so the old ATF oil had plenty of time to completely drain away. Truthfully I never quite understood the reason for this oil spec change!

This change makes sense, because you need to only one type of (replacement)oil instead of two.
Since i changed the oil 15W40 it seems that shifting is'nt that rough anymore!

Using the same as engine oil in the sail drive is not universal for all drives - for instance the 120 S-E still requires GL5 SAE 75W-90 oil - specification sheet attached.

Hi thanks for all the replies. I assume the official memo from Volvo interpreted as stating that SAE 15-40 oil should be used in future. Thanks

Hi, yes, and it is a must, not an option even if you had ATF before.
Best regards
