Wanted MD22/TMD22 parts

Building up a spares inventory  so  looking for bits or an entire scrap engine but especially fuel system, cylinder head, heat exchanger.

I have a 120S saildrive that is looking for a new home in the states.  Paid $8000 to rebuild and the yard buggered it.  I ended up buying a new 130.

Those engines are getting a bit old now, and on the basis that their weak points were the cylinder heads and the heat exchangers, I think you'll be hard-pressed to find any.

My advice would be to replace it with a Beta when it finally dies.  They are a much better engine.

I am trying to avoid replacement. Hard to  find an alternative where the engine has all the necessary service fittings on the port side  and has the same volume - Sole is a possibility. All the popular brands are not suitable

All the popular brands are not suitable. Interestingly VP still list new replacement heat exchanger for this engine ( although  at a stratospheric price) and there are from time to  time old stock  items on the usual sites.

I replaced my one with a Beta 50.  Easy swap.

It sits on the bearers perfectly with the rear mounts even using the same holes.

The exhaust crosses over onto the same side with the cross-over riser.  It's easy to switch the control cables over to the other side of the propshaft tunnel.

Took me a day to install.

I wrote an article about it in last year's BOA yearbook.

I am unaware of the engine room layout for your boat but from the Beta Marine data sheet this engine is not suitable for me - only 50 hp (mine is 78 hp) The more powerful engines in the Beta range  all have the same layout with heat exchanger on port side and injectors, fuel lines etc on the starboard which would be inaccessible for me. There is not the space to  redirect  exhaust etc

Another reason to  keep  the TMD  - weight 250 kg 2000cc

Don't just look at the hp when comparing engines.  The engne in my boat was the TAMD-22 (105hp) and I replaced it with a Beta 50, and guess what?  The Beta 50 gives the same power and boatspeed at cruising revs.

The TMD produces it's 78hp at 4,300rpm.  When cruising at 2,500rpm, it produces about 40hp.

The Beta 50 produces 40hp at it's cruising revs (which is 1900rpm).

All engines are not equal.

The TMD is based on a car engine (BL O-series) and is a low-compression engine, so produces its power at high revs, which you just don't use on a boat.  The turbo doesn't even start producing power until nearly 2,500 rpm.

Just looked at the data sheets, and:

At 2,000 rpm, the TMD-22 produces 30hp
At 2,500 rpm, the TMD-22 produces 40hp

At 2,000 rpm, the Beta 50 produces 42hp
At 2,500 rpm, the Beta 50 produces 47hp

So at the same cruising rpm, the Beta 50 is actually more powerful than the TMD-22, and has more torque too as it's a 2.2l engine rather than a 2.0l engine.

The Beta 60 is even stronger as it's a 2.5l unit.

On the Ocean series, the service side issue is the biggest problem, as one would have to cut an access panel in the shower (worst place for it, as difficult to waterproof) and also move a lot of stuff that is mounted on the that wall inside the engine room. And who wants to do maintenance through a small hole like they do on aft cockpits - we are spoiled with a huge engine room access door in the galley :))

I only found the one Solé Diesel model with the service side on port as well, so that would be the first to look at, but luckily our MD22 is doing okay so far (knock on wood). We carry a good collection of spares (but no heat exchanger or spare block as we're liveaboards and so don't have a garage).

I recently removed the head and sent it off to have the valves done.
Everything went more or less fine, but removing the exhaust manifold with 10cm of clearance on the shower side was absolutely brutal. I couldn't imagine if the injectors and such were on the other side.

Since my initial post I have had little luck in finding spares or a scrap engine -  are they all going to landfill? There was a Montego clyinder head on Ebay - I was tempted but was probably too far gone to be worth reconditioning. There is another Sherpa engine going but I'd prefer a complete same model as mine (TMD 22P) as many parts not compatible with auto version. I had my heat exchanger reconditioned for a very reasonable price in Turkey  - they can also fix or find replacements for many components. A cylinder head would be useful  but extremely rare...... Will keep looking.
