Fire extinguisher
« on: December 23 2019, 14:13 »
Has any one any idea about the dry water mist fire extinguishers. I was looking to renew the ones on our boat and wondered if this type would be better than powder ones. (I've seen the mess powder makes when they have gone off by mistake in truck cabs)
They have rating for liquid. Electrics. Paper wood.and seldom for f type. So would appear to cover the types needed for a boat.

We have a 3kg and a 6 kg foam extinguisher on board, the small one incl class F near the kitchen. Pay attention to frost resistance because they are water based.

interesting about frost,i hadn't thought of that ,but shouldn't be a problem  as they can be taken off over winter.

We have water mist extinguishers and as a former fire engineer I would recommend. Can be used on all types of fire including electrical and fat fires, are safe to use in confined spaces (unlike powder and inert gasses) and should you ever need to use won't create a huge clean up problem. I got mine here -

They are a bit more expensive than the powder types but if you ever need to use an extinguisher you will spend a lot more on clean up costs if a powder extinguisher is used.

kweetoo, the mess is what ime trying to avoid should I ever need to use one, I've seen the destruction with powder on engines and wiring looms , also when they have fallen from bad mountings or left loose in truck cabs, when we tilt the cab they near destroy the interior with the clean up job being almost impossible. so it looks like dry water will be a better choice, just need to get down to the boat and see what sizes to fit and where to put them.
was thinking 3 ltr in saloon, and  1ltr in each of the berths and  deck locker.

The 2nd video convinced us to replace all powder extinguishers in our new used boat by big foam extinguishers.
In 2020 we will add a few small extinguisher spray bottles, also in our house.
