Bavaria 32 Holiday 1997
« on: March 14 2019, 19:20 »
I am considering purchasing a Bavaria 32 Holiday , 1997 model    its difficult for me to find specification on its weight and ballast ratio. Does anyone know the answer or can help . I have looked at "Sail boat data" .com and they don't seem to have that model listed.

I believe this is one of the first J&J designs of that size which formed basis of all the 30-33' boats for the next 10 years or so. Although there are minor difference between the different iterations (Bavaria were changing models every 2 or 3 years!) it will be the same hull and keel as the later 32s which have a displacement of 3750kgs and a keel weight of 1060kgs giving a ballast ratio of around 28%. The design was introduced right at the start of the RDC and would have just got into Cat A Ocean. These figures are typical of just about all mass produced boats sold by the major builders of the time (and since) with the move to beamier, lighter displacement hull forms.

Hope this helps

Thanks Symphony. Your description is very clear. I can see Bavaria's have a generally lighter  ballast Ratio. I have heard that they heel  over more easily. I had hoped  the older ones like my prospective 1997 one would have been heavier. As stated  said they are  similar to their competitors of the time. I think I have done my homework well enough on all of the other aspects of this boat versus my needs , and  now complimented with some missing details I think I can go ahaead and do what I have to do now.
Thanks

Hello Mark,
maybe you find this information helpful:
It is from an german sailor, who travelled with a Bavaria32 Holiday cross the atlantic and back.

Thanks for posting that. Very interesting. I note he quotes different figures for displacement, ballast and draught to later iterations, giving a ballast ratio of 31% rather than 28%. Combination of deeper draft  and more ballast would probably make the boat a sharper performer than later boats.

Hi Mark
I attach herewith a few pages of the original Bavaria leaflet of the boat you are considering to buy.
As you can see in the last page all design data are reported.
