Winches
« on: February 21 2019, 15:55 »
What size winches should I fit to the rear cockpit mounts on my Bavaria 40 2001?
I need to take a couple out with me to Greece and can't measure them here in the UK.

On the 40 Ocean from the same year the primaries are Harken 44 and the secondaries Harken 32. I've retrofitted the secondaries and it was easy - there already is a glassed in aluminium plate and you just drill and tap the bolt holes. Harken installation manual tells you the size and bolt head to use.

The 2001 aft-cockpit model has the same winches as the Ocean to my recollection. I can check next week when visiting my boat (on the hard).

We have also retrofitted spinnaker winches by PO, I can check their size as well (maybe lewmar 28 in our case)

Thaks for that. When I last used the boat back in September from what I remembered the winch mounts looked quite small. From what I have read for the size of boat a 40 should be fitted but I don't think the mounts are big enough. So a 32 looks like it should be okay?

Just visited our boat, sea still frozen in Finland..

Halyard winces on cabin top Harken 40
Genoa sheet winches (also used for spin braces) Harken 44
Stern winches (spinnaker sheets) Lewmar 34, looks like retrofitted.

My 1998 Bav Ocean 42 has Harkin 44's as primaries and I recently installed Harkin 40's that I picked up off ebay as secondaries.

I have a BAV 40 / 2002 and had the original genoa winches (if memory serves, I am not on the boat) Harken 44s onto the coachroof replacing/upgrading the working winches (again if memory serves Harken 36), moved those to the aft as spinnaker winches and got new Harken 48 for new genoa winches. The 48s fit perfectly in place of the old 44s. Fitting the 44s on the coachroof was a bit tricky but I got it all done for cheap in Tunisia. Imo winches can not be big enough, especially when sailing with my kids and wife.

I have the Bav39 2006 which was replacement for the earlier 40 I think. Mine came factory fitted with lewmar 40s on coach roof, lewmar 44s for Genoa and lewmar 16s for the rear spinnaker winches.

On my 1998 Ocean 42 the Primaries are Harkin 48's - I just added Harkin 40's as secondaries.  This has really enhances both sailing the boat as a Cutter and flying the Asymmetrical Spinnaker.
