2007 BAVARIA 37 STEERING GEAR FAILURE
« on: November 29 2018, 11:34 »
Does anybody have a diagram of a chain, horizontal shaft and cogs steering gear (no cables or quadrant) for a 2007 Bavaria 37?

Sorry - don't have a diagram but I do own a 37 from the same vintage and the same steering setup so am curious what the problems are.

I have the same vintage and model B37.
I’m looking for details on the steering box. I noticed play in the vertical shaft attached to the rack gear, I think this play is enough when under load for the bevel drive gear to unmesh and slip a tooth. With extreme load on the bevel drive gear pulling it up and out of mesh, combined with rack gear shaft play I can see some bearing and resetting is required.  Has anyone tried to do this?
Cheers Richard

Hi - Sorry for not noticing this.  I had a failure on my 2006 B37 that was this issue:  https://forums.ybw.com/index.php?threads/lewmar-steering-gear-failure.174226/ I strongly recommend taking the cover off from the starboard aft cabin and inspecting the cobra base unit.  We got some practice with the emergency tiller.  Sadly I couldn't persuade Lewmar to replace it FOC due to the length of time since new....

hi .. sorry for the late entry as i just saw this ..

I have a 2009 Bav 34 and I think your nightmare is is exactly what happened to me last summer .. suddenly, on hard acceleration fwd, i completely lost steerage. The chain (but not the wheel) had gone around so far that the turnbuckel tried to bend around the lower gear and broke. I grabbed the emergency tiller and was able to get to the dock and did have a spare chain on board, but wonder now how to prevent this from happening again.

Did you get anything useful from your post?

Hello @awk1001

Did you have some fotos? An Adresse of lewmar ?

I have a 37CR 2006 and wondering of a noise out of the steaming system for years. Maybe no problems happens at me cause of steering most of the time with auto pilot. So not to much power comes on the wheel. But specially downwind there ist a noise to here.

Hope you can help me. I no to oben in aft cabine but did not now how to look for
Regards
Heiko
