Approximate length of reef lines
« on: February 12 2023, 18:09 »
I'm about to order new reef lines and would like someone to confirm if the lengths I measured look sane. Note: I'm only replacing the long lines going into the cockpit, not the short ones in the boom.

Reef 1:
From point where line is fixed to the boom up into sail: 2m
Down again: 2m
From end of boom to mast: 5m
Down to the deck: 2m
From mast back to cockpit: 5m
Reserve on top: 3m

TOTAL for reef 1: 19 meters

Reef 2:
From point where line is fixed to the boom up into sail: 3.5m
Down again: 3.5m
Rest same as reef 1

TOTAL for reef 2: 22 meters

The system is a Selden, like this one: https://support.seldenmast.com/files/1380900685/595-992-T.pdf

Maybe one of you has changed the lines and can tell me if I'm in the right ballpark.

I recently changed the reefing lines on our B39 to 10mm Dyneema.
For the boom end I bought:
Reef 1 = 24m
Reef 2 = 29m

We have 2 reefs only and reef 2 is very ‘deep’ . I allowed ‘plenty’ and cut off what I didn’t need.

dont forger to arg some meters vor the for and back in the boom. at the shorter first reeve it might be 2,5 to three Meters each way. for the second reeve you have to add to lengs of the boom. so you have to add 5 and 10 meters to you measurement
if you sail is set to top both slides in boom are nearly to front, at first the second reef, the first maybe in the middle. only than you have the possibility to tighten the front reef line,

What do you mean by "deep" and you allowed "plenty" - did you buy much more than needed?

Good point! The length of line inside the boom is roughly equal to 3x the boom length. The updates measurements are therefore as follows:

Reef 1:
From point where line is fixed to the boom up into sail: 2m
Down again: 2m
From end of boom to slider: 3m (max)
Slider back to end of boom: 3m (max)
From end of boom to mast: 5m
Down to the deck: 2m
From mast back to cockpit: 5m
Reserve on top: 3m

TOTAL for reef 1: 25 meters

Reef 2:
From point where line is fixed to the boom up into sail: 3.5m
Down again: 3.5m
From end of boom to slider: 5m (max)
Slider back to end of boom: 5m (max)
From end of boom to mast: 5m
Down to the deck: 2m
From mast back to cockpit: 5m
Reserve on top: 3m

TOTAL for reef 2: 32 meters

These numbers are now close to Lazy Pelican's. That's a good sign!

I mean a err on the generous side- the last thing you need is lines that are short.
Your lengths above look about right.

I have now replaced the lines and to my surprise, my first estimations were pretty closes on and I bought way to many meters.

Measured lengths of old lines

Reef 1: 17.5m
Reef 2: 26m

Both were a bit on the short side and adding 1m for each does not hurt. This leaves us with roughly 19m for reef 1 and 27m for reef 2.

And I bought: 25m for reef 1 and 32m for reef 2.This now leaves me with 6m of blue 10mm line and 5m of red. Maybe that's enough to replace the short lines in the boom?

We were able to match our rig to the Selden website and from there get the exact fit.  It was somewhat buried in a pdf but that was our source.  Good luck.
