Bavaria Ocean 38 fuel efficiency
« on: August 22 2016, 12:06 »
Hi,

What fuel usage should I expect from my Bavaria Ocean 38 CC. It has a Volvo Penta ( perkins) 50hp MD22P.

Regards

Simon

I would suggest between 2.5 and 3 ltr per hr. Geoff

It depends entirely on the engine speed, and the load on the engine.  Typically, you might expect to use around 4 litres an hour at 2000rpm, rising to 6-7 litres an hour at 2500rpm.

The OP said he had a 50hp engine, the MD22P is 59hp and the MD22L is 50hp. I wonder which he has?

Tiger 79 has a point.
I  will recheck, as the Marine Survey states MD22P 50 HP while the registration docs stated 55HP!

Seems like a large engine for a 38.

Only way is to measure consumption over a period of time.

I have a D1-30 on a 2010 model Bav38. Folding prop and saildrive. On 2100rpm, I sit on 5.4 to 5.6kn and use between 1.5 and 2 litres per hour in calm conditions.

The 38 Ocean was a much heavier boat than later 38' models and had an MD 22 as standard.

Different boat but I have a Vision 46 with 55HP Volvo with fixed 3 blade prop saildrive. Over 4 months cruising in a variety of conditions including motoring, motor sailing even into heavy seas and normal docking, mooring anchoring and occasional charging etc I averaged 0.7 US Gal/hr. This was calculated logging engine hours between fill ups of the tank.  I typically do not run my engine over 2000 rpm.

If the Ocean 38 is a heavier boat that may help correlate a little for you since we may be similar weight....

As stated before I would log engine hours between fill-ups and calculate yourself. If your fuel gauge is anything like mine it is invaluable information to have at hand !

Our Bavaria 38 Ocean CC 2000 is equipped with a Volvo Penta MD-22 L engine (55 hp). We have a 130 S saildrive with a fixed 3-blade Volvo Aluminum prop.

We run the engine at 1800-2000 rpm using 0.7 us gallons per hour with an average speed through water of 6.5 knots.

Engine has 2000 hours plus engine hours and runs like the proverbial top with regular filter and oil changes every 100 hours or twice a year. Only repair has been to replace the seawater cooled exhaust elbow.

Thanks  to all who have posted in reply!

I have checked and the engine on my Bavaria ocean 38 is an MD22L-B.

In the meantime, i have had to replace the exhaust elbow and connector ...
