Stanchion bases again - original design or already upgraded?

The famous stanchion bases topic once again... This time Bavaria 40 AC, 2001 vintage.

While searching for potential freshwater leak sources, I took a look at my stanchion base backing plates. What I found was apprx 20x60mm 3mm thick copper plates used as big backing plates. Would anyone know if these are these original design or already upgraded by p.o.? Yes - the material is most likely copper: I scraped the dark brown surface and revealed fresh coppery color.

My rationale says Bavaria would not have used copper (cost, electrochemistry) in such a place, but p.o. being electronics professional may have had a hands-on-supply of such material.

I agree, that doesn't sound original at all and the material makes no sense, being relatively soft and valuable. Where there are backing plates on my boat (mooring cleats), they were aluminium. The stanchions only had large (penny) washers in stainless backing them. I've added 4mm stainless plates to the pushpit when building the stern arch.

P.S.: Attachments will return later, when I've hopefully rescued the old ones.
